Project 3.65M: 365 Days of 10,000 Steps

Starting tomorrow, March 16, 2017, my goal is to walk 10,000 steps every day. Why tomorrow? It's 365 days until my wedding. That should be good motivation, right? (Let's hope so.)

I have faith that I can do it. I had a long stretch during the fall where I got 10,000 steps every day. Lately I've been close enough most days that a short walk around the block or something will do the trick. My biggest area of improvement, though, will be weekends. A few years ago, I used to walk almost every day for at least one mile. I can definitely get back in that rhythm, I just need to get good podcasts (suggestions welcome!) or get the Game of Thrones audiobooks on my phone.

When I was on a roll in the fall, two major things helped me rack up those steps:

1. Park far away and talk the stairs whenever possible. That's the easy one, right? When I asked for tips on Facebook, that's what most people suggested. My favorite parking spot at work is a bit further than the coveted spots right by the stairs and elevator. I try to park at the back of the parking lots at stores too. I just need to get back in the habit of taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

2. Set a reminder on your phone. This has made the most difference, I think. I have a reminder set to go off every day on the half hour from 6:00AM to 5:00PM. My FitBit goal is to get 250 steps every hour from 6:00AM until 6:00PM, so that helps me remember to get up and move. At work, I'll put on my shoes and walk around our area of the mall. Since my phone is almost always nearby, it's a great way to remember and not to lose track of time. On the weekends, I usually don't meet the goal of 12 hours because I'll sleep in a bit, but there's no excuse on weekdays.

So here goes nothing! Or rather here goes 3.65 million steps!
