o n e | Whirley Pop | One of my favorite snacks is popcorn. I've actually been known to go to a crappy movie just for the popcorn. (It's worth mentioning now that movie theater popcorn in the UK just isn't as good. Or as big for that matter.) But all my life we've had a Whirley Pop popcorn maker at home. We've always got popcorn in the freezer ready to be popped. N E V E R microwave popcorn. So when I moved to the UK, it was something I was missing a lot. We had a somewhat difficult time tracking down popcorn kernels at the store. The one shop that sells them were sold out when we were looking. Luke ended up ordering a 5kg bag online. FIVE KILOGRAMS! It's massive! For a while, we made do with using a regular covered pot, shaking it over the hob, but it just wasn't the same. My mom ended up buying us one for my birthday earlier this month. Getting it in the post was the best surprise ever! It definitely makes our popcorn and Netflix evenings more enjoyable.
t w o | The Nostalgia of Old TV | I recently finished all 8 seasons of Full House on Netflix (Netflix UK for the win!) and started on last year's reboot, Fuller House. Watching Full House made me feel all the feels. I was too young for the original airing, but I used to watch it in syndication with my sister after school. We would eat graham crackers dunked in milk and hang out with the Tanner family for a while. It was cheesy and Luke and I enjoyed making fun of it, but Fuller House is even worse. It reminds me of the cheesy Disney shows that have been popular in the last decade. The bright colors. The over-accessorizing in everyone's outfit. The know-it-all kid. The synchronized group dances. It all fits and it's all cheesy and annoying. I'm not quite sure how it's the most popular show currently on Netflix because I'm forcing myself to get through season 2 and watching out of obligation. But I do find it curious that all these old TV shows are getting reboots. I can't decide if I'm into it or not. Some shows I don't watch have already been rebooted. I think X-Files and Twin Peaks? Will & Grace comes out this fall, which I'm very excited about and trying really hard to forget about the finale where Will and Grace don't talk for years. I read an article that NBC wants to reboot The West Wing, 30 Rock, The Office, and a few others. I didn't watch The West Wing, but as I understand it, the show covered President Bartlet's full two terms? I liked the tidy wrap up of 30 Rock, one of my favorite shows, and who would even be on The Office reboot? Dwight and Phyllis? What do you think of all these old shows getting new life?
t h r e e | Home Details | On Wednesday, I posted a home update (here), some before and after photos of the projects I've been doing around the house. I think we're finally at a place where our house feels like a home. We've done our best to make it our own, building it from scratch, and we've done so on a tight budget. I'm waiting on a shipment from Colorado of the rest of my belongings. Some of which are home decor items, which will be great to finish off some spaces around house. One of the things I've already done that I'm absolutely obsessed with are the pillar candles in our fireplace. When I visited in April, we viewed a ton of houses and I fell in love with the last one we saw. I immediately started decorating it in my mind and it was a bit of a heartbreak when we didn't get it. Filling the fireplace with pillar candles stuck in my mind so clearly at that house and I'm glad I was able to create the same look at this house. We got the candles from IKEA (where else?) The two tall candles were separate and we got two sets of four smaller candles of varying sizes. It was surprisingly cheap. (Side note, I also used some of the leftover white paint from my projects to touch up the bricks/tiles in front of the fireplace. It looks a lot better.
f o u r | Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? | "But the twin rise of the smartphone and social media has caused an earthquake of a magnitude we’ve not seen in a very long time, if ever. There is compelling evidence that the devices we’ve placed in young people’s hands are having profound effects on their lives—and making them seriously unhappy." Check out this article from The Atlantic about smartphones and social media in iGen (born 1995-2012). A friend brought it up at dinner recently and it sparked an interesting conversation about how different even our experience with technology, internet, and social media is from the generation after us. It raises interesting questions about how the availability of all this information and technology is reshaping our society and changing our mental health.
f i v e | Favorite Instagrammer Right Now | My favorite Instagrammer this month is @abalancingpeach. Kelsey and I actually went to elementary school together, but then her family moved and we lost touch. I think we got reconnected first on Facebook, then Instagram, now I read her blog. She's the sweetest person and her content is awesome! She has beautiful photos and she's so fun to follow! She recently moved from Wyoming to Montana and quit her engineering job to pursue her passions. Big life changes is something I can certainly relate to right now! Also, she's actual #stylegoals!
